Women in Charge #2: Ms. Bowsher

From third through fifth grade, some of us–the lucky ones with the highest scores on a particular standardized test we had taken in second grade–would walk twice a week from the main school building to Ms. Bowsher’s portable classroom. We came for Explorations, a class which was supplemental to our late elementary curriculum and integral to our happiness. Beneath the poetry posters Ms. Bowsher had lettered herself,* we discovered logical matrices and etymology and the binary system. We assumed mythological personae for a Summit of the Gods and folded a fleet of paper airplanes to experiment with aerodynamics. Ms. Bowsher believed we learned by doing and sometimes didn’t make it to the blackboard at all; she just sat at the rectangle table with us and we talked for the full hour. “You learn by making connections,” she said. Soho20 Member Interview: Darla Bjork

Darla Bjork has been a member of Soho20 for fifteen years and currently serves as President of the Board. In addition to being a painter, Bjork is also a psychiatrist who has had a private practice in New York City for many years. Her work has evolved from abstract portraits that reflected people she worked with in mental institutions to abstract landscapes influenced by her childhood in rural Minnesota and now by the view of the Catskill Mountains from her studio in Woodstock, NY. ATTENTION: PEOPLE WITH BODY PARTS– a post from an organization we love

Attention: People With Body Parts is a body-positive initiative with an emphasis on book-making, letter-writing, and collaborative projects. The project started in 2012 when more than forty people were asked to write to their fingernails, their skin, their cancer. These are the parts that carry stories and histories that layer our lives. They make the individual self-construct and self-destruct, and ultimately make us move. Continue reading

Soho20 Member Interview: Elizabeth Bisbing

Elizabeth Bisbing has been a member of Soho20 since 2003. Her upcoming show, “More Life Than Still,” will be 9/2 – 9/27, with an opening on Thursday 9/4 at 6:00pm. I was able to chat with Bisbing in her studio on Monday (7/7) about her show, her time at Soho20, and a program she is developing to bring art and positive female role models to young girls.
