Ann Young was born in Chicago and grew up in the mid west. She now lives and paints in rural northeastern Vermont and in Brooklyn, NY. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, she has delved into many media. First ceramic sculpture of human figures and animals, then large scale totemic carvings in cedar followed by a combination of these two media in large gallery installations. In recent years she has focused exclusively on oil painting. Her work investigates what it is to be human through representational imagery of people, places and situations. The emotional geography of the human form and the many diverse parts that make up the individual are of paramount importance. There is a strong element of social realism throughout her works, which is characterized by bright colors, strong imagery and universal themes.
