ELEONORA TAMMES

bio

Dutch artist Eleonora Tammes earned her MFA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where she studied painting, drawing, graphics and art history. Following her formal training, she undertook extensive travels. Her exposure to varied and unfamiliar cultures is reflected in both the technique and the content of her work. Eleonora Tammes has exhibited her artwork in England, the U.S.A., Switzerland and throughout the Netherlands

James Kuslan, art critic, has written of Tammes’ work: “Tammes’s art is one of density, her work is so packed with content that it continues to unbud and flower in the viewers mind long after he is no longer in its presence. Her paintings do not solicit viewers with the seduction of tactility. Tammes seems to be documenting, with an almost scientific objectivity, an organic process which is simultaneously an evocation of some aspect of nature experiencing stages of its life cycle. Tammes’s approach requires one to probe in the manner of a time traveller who must penetrate the surface in front of him in order to glimpse the back story. One message of the layering method is that the surface ( the Present ) could not exist without what it covers in other words the Past. The effect is one of timelessness and limitlessness. Tammes’s paintings laugh at the concept of ‘frame’.”

statement

The works on paper by Eleonora Tammes are non-figurative. A rythmic build-up, the suggestion of change, organic processes, form repetitions and structures dominate the compositions. Central is the combination of shapes and line patterns, color shades and movement. Close study of her work reveals a fascination with form and proportion. As if, for her, painting is a matter and manner of research into the ways elements of form relate and interact with each other. Her intention is to discover and employ the interplays of light, shape, color and structure.

Tammes says of her work: “Like individuals forming an audience, or atoms a mineral lattice, grapevines a vineyard and bricks a wall, I build assemblages of graphical elements characterized by regular and irregular patterns. These patterns reflect my love of construction and express aspects inherent to entities composed of smaller units, such as process, purpose, function, mode, belonging, limitations and flux.”
