Eva Mantell – Statement

( bio / statement / work )

In my sculpture and paintings I use rule-based gestures that I repeat to build structure. Every gesture creates meeting points which could each be the start of something new. The Self-Made Tapestry: Pattern Formation in Nature is a book that explores structures in biology and chemistry and has been an important source for my thinking. Our cells and our bodies are subject to the same rules that make these natural tapestries. This represents a deep connection to all life. But what about our consciousness? How do we know our experience? Are we weaving, or have we been woven into, do we tear and unravel and repair? What part are we in the living tapestry of nature?
