In Elizabeth Bisbing's second solo show at SOHO20 Chelsea Gallery, on view from October 31st to November 25th, the artist revisits the themes of domesticity and self- portraiture in two series of gouache on paper collages.
Using her signature palette of bright, almost electric colors interspersed with deep shadow, Bisbing has reconfigured old master paintings by recasting the original troupe with members of her own family and friends and scenes from her own domestic life as a child, a wife, a mother and an artist. These rich interior views are full of pattern and hidden details. In pieces based on Vermeerıs "The Soldier and a Girl", Vuillardı's "Suitor" and Renoir's "Girl With Watering Can", among others, Bisbing has placed a boy engrossed in a video- game, an image of herself holding a grandchild, cats lying supine on a kitchen table
The artist will also be presenting three sets of paper- dolls + outfits, based on paper dolls of the 1950ıs and 60ıs, and Bisbing as a child. These whimsical pieces include several outfits and accessories that will be presented both on the dolls and on sheets of museum board, as paper-dolls are packaged. Elizabeth Bisbing completed her MFA at Vermont College in Montpelier VT in the spring of 2004. She has had several solo shows including Celia and Me, at SOHO20 Chelsea gallery, MFA Exhibition in Montpelier VT; Recent Work at the Monmouth Art Alliance of NJ, and Characters and Expressions at Fairliegh Dickinson University in NJ. Her work has been reviewed in New York Magazine and The Sun. There will be an Opening Reception to meet the artist Saturday, November 4th from 5- 7pm.
