Susan Case
Beyond the Frame

September 6- October 1, 2005

In Beyond the Frame, Susan Case's first solo exhibition at SOHO20 Chelsea Gallery, the artist investigates the boundaries of painting, photography and sculpture in a series of mixed media wall pieces and sculptures. Constructed of strips of text, old family snapshots as well as familiar images from art history and props from daily life, each piece is richly textured with a myriad of visual metaphors evoking time, memory and the complexities of human relationships

In the eponymous piece Beyond the Frame, a photographic image of a woman's legs and mid-section are superimposed upon a panel in which a picture frame is central. The artist thus invites viewers to consider context, the physical structure of a frame that encloses images, as well as the ways in which we frame experience.

In Are You Lonesome Tonight? Case considers the potential of meeting someone through the classifieds. A teacup and saucer in which lie several images of mouths faces and sets of eyes sit beside a frame that holds a photograph of the lower half of a stranger's face. The disembodied pieces of faces, a long with the very particular placement of each object create a sense of overwhelming tension, danger as well as hope. Together the series elicits a lingering nostalgia, which serves as a catalyst for our remembered experiences.

Susan Case has been involved in several group and solo shows around the country. Beyond the Frame is her first solo exhibition in New York. The artist lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
