In her new large and small works, Désirée Koslin uses leftovers from the marketplace and from institutional consumers such as plastic shopping bags, twist ties and package strapping along with conventional and historic textile materials. New strategies using traditional techniques have been employed to craft these objects into second-use fabrics and sculptural forms. By doing so, a transmission or re-purposing of knowledge have taken place in which the interworked elements dictate spacing, placement and composition. A willing acquiescence to these new materials occurred in this process while their sustainability was assessed and their validity questioned.
The vanitas theme is also present in floral imagery representing the ephemeral. Flowers in pilings of precious fabrics sprout along twisted columns, in human-hair ornaments, and in shirred cloth abstractions as symbols of the evanescent as well as the sustaining life force.
