In Felicia Letowsky's second solo show at SOHO20 Chelsea Gallery, the artist explores the preciousness of life, and the beauty of each breath we take in a series of porcelain sculptures and black and white photography. In this installation, Letowsky uses the fragility of porcelain petals to create beautiful formations along the walls. Each petal is hand-patted to have the artist's imprint, reminiscent of the texture found in actual petals. She commonly uses nature as a metaphor with her work, describing it as; "when something beautiful can whither away to nothing, and then re-grow itself into another amazing creation, it is an inspiration to see these moments in the cycle of life. Life is a world of fragile things; one never knows when they may take their last breath. Each breath we take is a chance to appreciate a moment in time." Letowsky uses just a simple palate of gray scale for these formations. As the viewer walks around the space the pieces go from white unglazed porcelain fading to black, and slowly returning to white. The artist explains this as "Thinking about taking a last breath, I imagine everything goes from white and fades to black. Often we let ourselves slowly fade to black when we stop appreciating the simple beauty in life."
Black and white photos hang in the center of the room complementing the sculptures on the wall. Letowsky has photographed what she explains as; "beautiful moments that get lost in time." The artist has used black and white film to capture a soft nostalgia. These photographs are hung from monofilament in the center of the room, creating a wistfulness as they gently swing from the light breeze when the viewer walks past.
Felicia Letowsky has had several solo and group shows in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Sydney Australia. Her work was included in 2006 New York International Artist Festival. The artist received her MFA in Ceramics from Kent State University in May 2004.
