KATHY STARK: New Work
Opening Friday, October 12, 2018, 6-9PM, On view October 12 – November 10, 2018
SOHO20 is pleased to present an exhibition of abstraction painting by Kathy Stark. Of this work, she writes that:
“Since the mid 1970’s I have been fascinated with the movement and the image created by repeat motifs. As I continue to explore patterning I work with a variety of materials. In my work I use words, lines, dots, and images to make patterns. My work is intuitive, a process that is both planned and spontaneous. Each new body of work is an outgrowth of previous work incorporating current ideas, thoughts, and experiences. I do not set out to create a series but rather keep addressing the thought until I feel satisfied that the body of work completes the thought. This results in a series which usually continues for 4 or 5 years.”
It is from this outgrowth that Stark’s latest work emerges, with a series of meticulously-rendered paintings of repeating lines, and splotches of small, dotting circles. In reference to artists’ of the 1980s use of allegory, Craig Owens wrote that the works, as counter-narratives, were “static, ritualistic, and repetitive.” (1) Stark continues her longstanding interest in reiterative mark-making as both meditative ritual, and intuitive gesture.
