Mary Whalen is photographer and arts educator living in Kalamazoo Michigan. She has been a professional photographer for 20 years, and works as a photography teacher and darkroom coordinator at the Kalamazoo Institute of Art. She is also a Lincoln Center Institute teaching artist in the Kalamazoo area since 2002. She regularly exhibits work in the Southwest Michigan area and Soho20 gallery in New York City and recently published a chapbook with poet Julie Moulds titled,‘A Night Sonnet So Far’. The collection is a series of poems and photographs inspired by the limericks of Edward Lear. Whalen has been the recipient of numerous grants from the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo MI), Education for the Arts (Kalamazoo MI), and the Michigan Council of the Art. She has held workshops with teen mothers, children at risk, juvenile offenders, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kalamazoo to name a few of her community based projects.
