SOHO20 is pleased to present Unwritten, an exhibition of new works by member artist Petra Nimtz, her second exhibition in the gallery’s Bushwick location.

In this exhibition, the artist presents a scaled down body of physically compact and visually assertive paintings and collages. This new series began out of necessity, while an injury prevented the artist from creating her typically large scale canvases, usually afforded by broad mobility. Despite their size, these works contain the bold immediacy that is always present within Nimtz’ oeuvre. From strokes of paint, charcoal, and cut paper, each frame bursts with vibrant levity, simplicity, and playfulness. Her commitment to this gestural vocabulary is fully seen and felt, through hints of anthropomorphic and architectural form. Like the title suggests, these works convey a sense of that which cannot be put into words. Each piece is present as if within the precise moment before a thought forms – before the delay that turns the nonconcrete into language. Never cold or analytical, the sprightly abstraction found in Nimtz’ work does not always want to be named.
