SOHO20 is pleased to present Perpetual Earth, an exhibition of new paintings by artist member Ginny Fox.

The paintings on display are largely inspired by the artist’s recent trip to Utah’s national parks, referencing both the complex structure and rich gradation of the rock formations. Fox’s process, continually adding and removing layers of paint, echoes the way that geology forms slowly over time by evolution and erosion. She builds up her marks spontaneously, depending on the viscosity of the paint, until a visual equilibrium is reached. Like the individual formations that collectively constitute the canyons of the Mountain West, each painting is vividly unique up close, constructing a sprawling landscape when seen together. The vibrations in her lines breathe vitality into the paintings’ surfaces, as if they have unlocked centuries of shifting bedrock’s subtle movement in a single picture plane.

Stepping away from her previous multi-panel works, each piece in this new series stands alone as a single composition. Fox continues to blur the boundary between manufactured and organic through hand-painted lines that create almost perfect right angles. In this new series, she experiments with the texture of the painting’s surface, allowing the brush strokes from gessoed under layers to remain visible in some, while others are painstakingly smooth. The paintings make no apologies about their beauty, invoking the meditative wonder of a small gesture within an expansive and enduring universe.
