I have been exploring constellations and myths, taking a modern view of their stories. For example, the god, Apollo mocked Eros because he considered Eros inferior in archery skills. To get even, Eros shot Apollo with an arrow to make him fall in love with Daphne, the daughter of the river god, Peneus. Eros then shot Daphne with an arrow to make her feel repulsed by Apollo. With Apollo in hot pursuit, Daphne prayed to her father to change her form so she could escape Apollo. Peneus, who wanted her to settle down and give him grandchildren, turned her into a laurel tree. Not a bird so she could fly away. Not a lion so she could have had Apollo for lunch. But a tree forever rooted to one spot. Daphne, an independent woman who didn't want a man at all but preferred to enjoy nature by herself, became the collateral damage of two gods competing with each other and a disgruntled third god, her father. A woman trying and failing to control her own life. There is no Daphne constellation but there should be so I have honored her by making her one.
