In this time of globalism, I'm drawn to the regionalism of state fairs. While each has its own quirky sensibility, there’s a sense of sameness between venues and eras. For generations, greasy food has been on offer, rides have been plentiful, parents have tended to overexcited children, and endless teens have fallen into predetermined narratives and hierarchies. Crossing the threshold is magical. The cheap lights, neon colors, fried food, thrill rides, giant prizes, and screaming laughter swirl about to create an infectious fantasy. I can't help but feel I've stepped into an American Dream.
